🫣 5 mistakes new IEP advocates make

Hey Reader,

Tonight, we're stepping into the no-judgment zone to tackle a topic that's a bit like eating your vegetables – not always fun, but good for you.

I'm talking about mistakes.

Yes, those cringe-worthy "oops" moments we all wish we could forget.

In the world of IEP meetings, these blunders are practically a rite of passage. But what if I told you they don't have to be your story?

It's time to pull back the curtain on the all-too-common mistakes I see new IEP advocates making over and over.

But don't worry – I won't leave you there. I'm going to show you how you can avoid them too. ;)

Let's get started!

Mistake #1: Failing to focus on what’s most important in a child's educational record. Falling into this trap is easy when an advocate wants to fix everything immediately inside an IEP. Have you ever seen an advocate do this - start tearing apart every page of the IEP like it's the worst document they've ever seen?

Mistake #2: Not building a collaborative relationship with the school team. Ya know, sitting at the table with the kind of energy that can derail IEP team efforts for months. This happens all the time and if it happened to you, just know you’re not alone.

Mistake #3: Overlooking the importance of data collection before making changes in an IEP. Getting new goals and services in the IEP might be important, but slow down for a sec and get a data collection plan to write present levels first.

Mistake #4: Misunderstanding the legal framework surrounding IEPs. This mistake can lead to missed opportunities. The law is actually written really well and there’s a bit of flexibility in it for a reason!

Mistake #5: Neglecting to prepare parents for IEP meetings. I’ve been in meetings where parents look almost as surprised as the staff when their advocate starts talking… know what I’m talking about?

These mistakes are exactly why the first 3 lessons inside the Master IEP Coach® Mentorship are all about the foundation of IDEA Law, learning what to focus on when changing an IEP (and what not to focus on), and prepping parents to be the best gosh darn collaborative voice at the IEP table.

Those mistakes are also the reason that I built the Master IEP Coach® Mentorship for parents, teachers, admins, and therapists.

This isn’t old-fashioned bulldog advocacy inside of the mentorship, it’s forward-thinking IEP Leadership and Teamwork at a whole new level.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: October 1st is the LAST TIME THIS YEAR that you can become a Master IEP Coach®
